Income Tax Slabs FY 2026-27 (Tax Year 2026-27): New vs Old Regime, ₹12 Lakh Rebate & Worked Example
Income tax slabs for FY 2026-27 (tax year 2026-27): new and old regime rates, ₹12 lakh rebate, standard deduction, surcharge and a worked example.

A software engineer in Gachibowli with a ₹14 lakh package opens payroll in April and asks one question: how much will actually be cut this year? The answer depends on the regime chosen, and since 1 April 2026 it also depends on a new statute. The Income-tax Act, 2025 now governs, and the old “financial year” and “assessment year” pair is replaced by a single “tax year”. The slab rates, however, have not been rewritten.
New regime slabs for FY 2026-27
The new regime is the default. You must actively opt out to be assessed under the old regime, and a person with business income can switch only in limited ways verify.
| Total income (₹) | Rate |
|---|---|
| Up to 4,00,000 | Nil |
| 4,00,001 – 8,00,000 | 5% |
| 8,00,001 – 12,00,000 | 10% |
| 12,00,001 – 16,00,000 | 15% |
| 16,00,001 – 20,00,000 | 20% |
| 20,00,001 – 24,00,000 | 25% |
| Above 24,00,000 | 30% |
The same slabs apply to individuals of every age, to HUFs, and to AOPs and BOIs (other than co-operative societies) that stay in the new regime. There is no separate slab for senior citizens under it.
Old regime slabs
| Total income (₹) | Below 60 years | 60 to 79 years | 80 years and above |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 2,50,000 | Nil | Nil | Nil |
| 2,50,001 – 3,00,000 | 5% | Nil | Nil |
| 3,00,001 – 5,00,000 | 5% | 5% | Nil |
| 5,00,001 – 10,00,000 | 20% | 20% | 20% |
| Above 10,00,000 | 30% | 30% | 30% |
The old regime keeps deductions such as Chapter VI-A (the 80C family), HRA, home-loan interest on a self-occupied house and LTA. Its rebate is only ₹12,500, for total income up to ₹5 lakh. Because the section numbers were rearranged by the 2025 Act, check the new numbering before quoting a deduction in a return verify. Our old vs new regime comparison for Hyderabad taxpayers runs the break-even maths, and our note on the tax year under the Income-tax Act, 2025 explains the terminology.

What salaried Hyderabad taxpayers should check
Employees in Kondapur, Hitech City, Gachibowli and Nanakramguda should check three things. First, the regime declared to the employer, since TDS is deducted on that basis and can be corrected only in the return. Second, HRA: reports on Budget 2026 say Hyderabad has been added to the cities with a 50% HRA limit, together with a requirement to disclose the landlord’s relationship verify. Third, the due date: reports indicate ITR-3 and ITR-4 filers now have until 31 August, while ITR-1 and ITR-2 remain 31 July verify. For return filing support see our ITR filing in Hyderabad page.

Under the default new regime: nil up to ₹4 lakh, 5% to ₹8 lakh, 10% to ₹12 lakh, 15% to ₹16 lakh, 20% to ₹20 lakh, 25% to ₹24 lakh and 30% above. Reports on Budget 2026 indicate no change from the earlier year verify.
Is income up to ₹12 lakh really tax-free?
Yes under the new regime, because of the rebate of up to ₹60,000, but not for income taxed at special rates such as short-term capital gains on listed shares. For a salaried person, the standard deduction of ₹75,000 takes the gross salary limit to about ₹12.75 lakh.
What is the difference between financial year and tax year?

Is the old tax regime still available?
Yes. Salaried individuals can opt out of the new regime each year. Business-income taxpayers have restricted switching rights, so check the conditions before opting in or out.
Do senior citizens get a different slab under the new regime?
No. The new regime has one slab table for all ages. Higher basic exemption limits for senior and super senior citizens exist only under the old regime.
Does surcharge apply to a ₹60 lakh income?
Yes. Surcharge of 10% on the tax applies where total income exceeds ₹50 lakh, followed by cess of 4%. Marginal relief may apply near the threshold.
