GST Registration for Startups in Hyderabad: Threshold, Documents, Process and Mistakes to Avoid

When must a startup in Hyderabad register for GST, what documents are needed, how the process works and the mistakes that cause rejection.

GST Registration for Startups in Hyderabad - startup guide by ComplianceKart

A SaaS founder in Kondapur crosses her first client invoice and asks her accountant whether she can keep invoicing without a GSTIN. The answer depends on the turnover, the type of supply and where the customer is. This guide covers all three.

Short answer: under section 22 of the CGST Act, 2017 a supplier must register once aggregate turnover exceeds the threshold, which is Rs 40 lakh for goods and Rs 20 lakh for services in general category States such as Telangana (confirm current notifications). Some businesses must register irrespective of turnover under section 24, for example certain inter-State suppliers of goods and some e-commerce suppliers.

When is GST registration mandatory for a startup?

  • Turnover above the threshold for goods or services (the threshold is calculated on aggregate turnover under the same PAN).
  • Inter-State supply of goods, subject to notified exemptions. Inter-State supply of services by small service providers is generally exempt from compulsory registration below the threshold (confirm the notification).
  • Selling through an e-commerce operator, subject to notified relaxations.
  • Reverse charge, casual and non-resident taxable persons and other categories listed in section 24.

Voluntary registration is also possible. Startups often register early to claim input tax credit (ITC) and to satisfy B2B clients who require a GSTIN.

Step-by-step process

Application is made in Form GST REG-01 on the GST portal. Under Telangana, the GSTIN begins with the State code 36. The proper officer is expected to act within the time prescribed in rule 9 of the CGST Rules, 2017 (confirm the current time limit and any biometric or physical verification requirement).

Documents needed

Item Note
PAN and Aadhaar Of the proprietor, partners or directors and the authorised signatory
Proof of principal place of business Rent agreement with utility bill, or ownership document
Bank proof Cancelled cheque or statement
Constitution proof Certificate of incorporation or LLP or partnership deed
DSC or EVC For companies and LLPs to sign the application

After registration: first-year obligations

  • File monthly or quarterly returns (GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B), even if there is no business (nil returns). Quarterly filing under the QRMP scheme is available to eligible taxpayers (confirm the turnover limit).
  • Issue valid tax invoices with the correct HSN or SAC code and GST rate.
  • Reconcile ITC with GSTR-2B before claiming.
  • Display GSTIN at the place of business.

Common mistakes

  • Delaying registration after crossing the threshold, which invites tax, interest and penalty exposure.
  • Mismatch between PAN name and the name on the application.
  • Using an address without supporting proof.
  • Missing returns, which can lead to notices and blocked e-way bill generation (confirm current rules).

Many Hyderabad startups sell software, consulting and design services to clients outside Telangana. Because the place of supply rules decide whether tax is CGST plus SGST or IGST, the registration state and the client’s location both matter. Registering in Telangana with the correct principal place of business keeps your invoicing consistent.

Why work with ComplianceKart

ComplianceKart is a boutique practice bringing Chartered Accountants, Company Secretaries and advocates under one roof. Think of a multi-speciality hospital: you walk in with one concern, and the physician, the radiologist and the surgeon coordinate on your case instead of you running between three clinics. GST registration works the same way, because it touches company law, tax, banking and contracts at once, and a single coordinated team keeps those pieces consistent.

We do not guarantee approvals or timelines, since those depend on the regulator and on your documents. What we can do is prepare the filings carefully, tell you what is likely to be queried and keep you informed at each step.
